Byrhtnoth 1 told Anonymous 708 to report to the vikings (Anonymi 1745) that he would fight to defend Æthelred 32's people and country.
Event Anon.BattMaldon  pp. 20-2, ll. 84-95   When Anonymi 1745 had realised that they could not get past those men who were guarding the causeway, they tried to trick Byrhtnoth 1 and his men (Anonymi 1743) and asked to be allowed to pass over the ford to advance their troops. Because of his pride Byrhtnoth 1 agreed to this and then Anonymous 709 (the son of Beorhthelm 32) called across the water to the vikings (Anonymi 1745); he urged them to come quickly so that the battle could begin.
Event Anon.BattMaldon  p. 22, ll. 100-105   While Anonymi 1745 were rushing across the River Blackwater, Byrhtnoth 1 ordered his men (Anonymi 1743) to form a phalanx with their shields and to hold firm against the vikings (Anonymi 1745).

Ravens circled and hoped for carrion.
Event Anon.BattMaldon  p. 22, ll. 127-8   Byrhtnoth 1 encouraged his warriors (Anonymi 1743) to keep their minds on the battle and to win glory from the Danes (Anonymi 1745).

Event Anon.BattMaldon  p. 24, ll. 138-142   Byrhtnoth 1 was furious at having been wounded by Anonymous 710 and with a javelin he stabbed Anonymous 710 through the neck and killed him.

Event Anon.BattMaldon  p. 24, ll. 149-58   Anonymous 712 threw a dart that travelled too far through Byrhtnoth 1. Wulfmær 11 had been stood by the side of Byrhtnoth 1; he very bravely pulled the spear from the body of Byrhtnoth 1 and hurled it back again at Anonymous 712.
Event Anon.BattMaldon  p. 24, ll. 152-8   Wulfmær 11 had been stood by Byrhtnoth 1 when Anonymous 712 had hit him with a dart. Wulfmær 11 very bravely pulled the spear from the body of Byrhtnoth 1 and threw it back at Anonymous 712 and the point went in so far that Anonymous 712 died.

Event Anon.BattMaldon  p. 24, ll. 168-80   Even after he had been injured by Anonymous 714, Byrhtnoth 1 made a speech and encouraged the younger men (Anonymi 1743) to press forward. When he could not stand on his feet any longer, he looked to the heavens and addressed the Lord.
Event Anon.BattMaldon  p. 24, ll. 181-4   He was hacked to death by some of the vikings (Anonymi 1745). Ælfnoth 15 and Wulfmær 11 2 gave their lives alongside their lord.

Event Anon.BattMaldon  p. 26, ll. 205-8   After Byrhtnoth 1 had been killed, Anonymi 1743 pressed forward and intended one of two things, to die or to avenge their friend.
Event Anon.BattMaldon  p. 26, ll. 209-24   Ælfwine 29 urged on his companions (Anonymi 1743) and made a speech. He exhorted them to remember the times that they had made speeches over mead and raised pledges while sitting in the hall about fierce encounters; he said that this was the occasion to test who was brave. Ælfwine 29 declared that he intended to make his noble lineage known to all, that he was of a great family amongst the Mercians. Ælfwine 29 further said that he did not want to leave himself open to the taunt that, once his leader had died, he had deserted and sought his homeland.
Event Anon.BattMaldon  p. 26, ll. 225-9   After he had made his speech, Ælfwine 29 pressed forward, remembering his feud, so that he might reach one of Anonymi 1745 with his spear and lay him out on the ground.
Event Anon.BattMaldon  pp. 26-8, ll. 230-43   Offa 9 shook his ash-spear and commended Ælfwine 29 for encouraging the rest of the men (Anonymi 1743). Offa 9 said that, with Byrhtnoth 1 dead, it was essential for each man to encourage the next. He then said that Godric 12 had betrayed them all and that when he rode away on the horse, many men had thought that it was their lord (Byrhtnoth 1) and because of this the army became fragmented. Offa 9 finished by condemning Godric 12 for his action.
Event Anon.BattMaldon  p. 28, ll. 244-54   Leofsunu 3 raised his shield and made a speech in answer to the one that Offa 9 had just made; he vowed that he would not flee even the length of a foot and instead he would push forward in order to avenge his lord and friend (Byrhtnoth 1).
Event Anon.BattMaldon  p. 28, ll. 255-9   Dunnere 1, who was a simple yeoman, shook his spear, called out over all and asked that each warrior avenge the death of Byrhtnoth 1 and not be anxious about life.
Event Anon.BattMaldon  p. 28, ll. 260-4   After the speeches by Offa 9, Leofsunu 3 and Dunnere 1, Anonymi 1743 went forward and did not care about life. They fought fiercely and prayed to God that they might avenge the death of their beloved Byrhtnoth 1 and bring destruction on Anonymi 1745.
Event Anon.BattMaldon  p. 28, ll. 265-72   Æscfrith 2 continued to help Anonymi 1743 eagerly; he did not weaken in the battle at all and instead loosed many arrows and continued to do so as long as he was able to wield weapons.
Event Anon.BattMaldon  p. 28, ll. 273-9   Edward 14 stood in the van (amongst Anonymi 1743) and announced that he did not intend to run away by so much as a foot when his superior (Byrhtnoth 1) lay dead. Indeed, he broke through the shield-wall and fought against Anonymi 1745 until he nobly avenged Byrhtnoth 1 and then himself was killed.

Event Anon.BattMaldon  p. 30, ll. 304-08   The two brothers (Oswald 9 and Eadwald 28), in speeches, encouraged the troops (Anonymi 1743) and told them that they must hold out in that time of need and must use their weapons without weakening.
Event Anon.BattMaldon  p. 30, ll. 309-19   Byrhtwald 6 raised his shield, shook his ash-spear and made a speech. He instructed Anonymi 1743 to be firmer in spirit and bolder in heart; he warned them that whoever turned away from the battle would regret it for ever. Byrhtwald 6 finished his speech by saying that he did not intend to leave but intended to lie beside his lord (Byrhtnoth 1).
Event Anon.BattMaldon  p. 30, ll. 320-1   Godric 13 also encouraged Anonymi 1743 with a speech.
