Notes In the eternal reign of our Lord Jesus Christ AD 884 from his incarnation truly declare as follows, I Æthelred, supported by the gift of Divine grace as Lord of the Mercian people, I transfer to Æthelwulf the land of 5 hides in the place called Himbleton, moreover the above mentioned land with all things belonging to it, that is woods, meadows, pastures and salt pans. There are six salt pans to prepare salt freely and without any tribute from the lord of the people beforementioned, dukes or 'Judicumve??'. That is by custom without the burden of wagons, unless only those which the aforesaid lord of the land of Himbleton shall bring forth. With the witness and consent of those whose names are seen written below, the chief men of the Mercians governed by the lord Æthelred. This was done in Risborough where at that time the Witangemot met and discussed with him the necessity of this decision, adjuring all men in future by these sayings of the Judge severe and just through the great Judgement, that this gift shall remain free for ever, whether in the aforesaid ground or in the salt place from all tax tribute. And if anyone has not kept it, which we do not desire, know that his reward shall come in the day of justice of God and His angels unless first he shall take care to make amends with due satisfaction.
