Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  38 While Anonymous 578 was taking the clothes of her lord (Anonymous 579) to the river to be washed, some thieves stole them. Anonymous 579 struck her several blows and bound her hands in iron manacles. As soon as she saw that he had left the house, she ran to the church where Swithhun 5 had been buried. Through his intervention the manacles fell from her hands to the ground.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  36 Anonymous 572 told his accompanying guide (Anonymous 574) on the way to Winchester that he was already feeling better. Before they reached the city, Anonymous 572 obtained the cure of his eyesight through the intervention of Swithhun 5.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  37 Anonymous 575 went to Winchester in order to receive alms, propping himself up during the journey on two crutches.

After the latter had learned Anonymous 575's intentions, he persuaded him to go to the tomb of Swithhun 5. Anonymous 575 spent the night there. In the morning the sacrist (Anonymous 577) asked him if he was feeling better. The sick man stood up cured before Swithhun 5's tomb.

Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  35 Two youths shining with a wondrous brightness spoke to Anonymous 570 in a nocturnal dream. In his vision he followed them to a church constructed with gold and jewels. In the church he saw a holy bishop (Swithhun 5) who instructed him to forgive his enemies and pray for those who calumniated and persecuted him. When Anonymous 570 asked for the bishop's identity, the latter told him that he would discover his name in Winchester. When Anonymous 570 awakened, he explained his vision to his wife (Anonymous 571).
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  34 While detained in a dark prison, Anonymous 569 heard from merchants (Anonymi 1524) about Swithhun 5 and his post-mortem miracles. Anonymous 569 began to pray for Swithhun 5's intercession and was miraculously released from his chains and shackles.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  33 Anonymous 568 was taken to the monastery in England were Swithhun 5 was buried. While she was staying there, she was healed.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  33 On a particular night Anonymous 568 yawned and did not make the sign of the cross on her mouth. She was violently seized by a demon.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  32 As soon as Anonymous 567 learned of Lantfred 1's arrival, he sent his messengers (Anonymi 1523) to him asking whether he could supply any sort of remedy for his wretched wife (Anonymous 566). Lantfred 1 told him to prepare a new candle and arrange for it to burn in honour of Swithhun 5. Anonymous 567 ordered a wax candle to be made without delay and to be taken in haste to Lantfred 1. The latter engraved on it a prayer for Swithhun 5. On the following day Anonymous 566 recovered her health and began praising the Lord.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  31 Anonymous 565 fell from his horse and broke his leg and his arm. Everyone who was there thought that he would die on the spot. Anonymous 564 felt gravely aggrieved and implored the Lord through the intercession of Swithhun 5. Suddenly the boy sprang up restored to health.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  32 Lantfred 1 travelled in France and was put up as a guest in the same village in which Anonymous 566 lay sick in unbearable pain.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  31 Anonymous 564 set off with a large retinue (Anonymi 1522) for a particular estate in which a mighty preparation for entertainment had been set up for him.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  30 Anonymous 563 came to Swithhun 5's tomb to be healed. He received the health of his body but did not repay thanks to God. However the crutches by which he had sustained his body bore witness that he had been cured and the crowds of onlookers (Anonymi 1521) who had been present there confirmed the event.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  29 Anonymous 561 left from the remoter parts of England led by Anonymous 562 to go to Winchester, hoping to be healed by Swithhun 5. When they were nearly three miles far from the town they stopped to rest for a while. Anonymous 562 was hungry and insisted that they should break their fast and eat before reaching Winchester. In the meantime they met some pilgrims (Anonymi 1519), who were on their way to Winchester. When Anonymous 561 realised that they had stopped near to a stone, he began to pray for Swithhun 5's intercession. He received his eyesight in that place, looked up and saw Winchester not far from there. He went in haste to the relics of Swithhun 5 and reported to the monks of that place (Anonymi 1520) how he had been cured.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  28 Hearing of Swithhun 5's many miracles, Byrhtferth 1 went barefoot to Winchester and offered insistent prayers to Swithhun 5. When the next day's dawn was breaking, he was found worthy to see the daylight with his eyes.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  28 Byrhtferth 1 went through a good many medicines and once his head was cauterised with twelve separate searings.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  27 Anonymous 559 was given four sheaves of wheat by Anonymi 1517 without the permission of the royal steward (Anonymous 560). When the latter found Anonymous 559 with the wheat, he asked him where he had got it from. As Anonymous 559 did not want to impute the theft to a friend, Anonymous 560 ordered him to be bound in shackles until he could first be flogged to the point of death and afterwards beheaded. While in prison Anonymous 559 asked the guards for a knife with which to trim his fingernails and after having prayed for Swithhun 5's intercession, he used the knife to cut through the huge beam. He managed to break away the iron mass of the spike, reached the door, grasped the lock and it came away as if there were no bolt. He then went to the tomb of Swithhun 5 and reported his story to the monks of that place.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  26 Anonymous 558 was condemned by Anonymi 1515 although he was innocent. Following Edgar 11's legislation, he was mutilated and lost both his hearing and his eyesight. He was led home by his friends (Anonymi 1516) and remained in this condition between 6 January and 25 April. Anonymi 1516 encouraged him to go to the tomb of Swithhun 5 which he did. He prayed for his hearing to be restored and he was found worthy to receive both his eyesight and his hearing.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  26 At the time of Edgar 11 a law was promulgated to serve as a deterrent against any sorts of crime. If any thief or robber were found anywhere in the country, he would be tortured at length by having his eyes put out, his hands cut off, his ears torn off, his nostrils carved open and his feet removed; and finally with the skin and hair of his head flayed off, he would be abandoned in the open fields to be devoured by wild beasts and birds and hounds of the night.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  25 After having checked Anonymous 556's hand, Flodoald 1 summoned his brother (Anonymous 557) and started preparing to go home. He also began to pray through Swithhun 5's intercession for Anonymous 556 to be spared an ignominious death. When the second day after Anonymous 556 had carried the hot iron had passed, he was taken before Eadric 26 and Anonymi 1514. Whereas Flodoald 1 and Anonymi 1513 saw the blister and swelling, Eadric 26 and Anonymi 1514 saw the hand to be as well healed as if it had never touched the heated metal.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  25 Because of a certain misdeed that Anonymous 556 had committed, Eadric 26 ordered him to be detained until he would carry in his hands an iron bar made red-hot by coals. If he were innocent, he would be released; if he were found to be guilty, he would undergo capital punishment. Flodoald 1 implored Eadric 26 to waive the ordeal and promised he would give him a pound of silver and hand over the slave into Eadric 26's possession. Anonymi 1513 also promised immense gifts to Eadric 26, desiring to free Anonymous 556. Eadric 26, however, refused their requests
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  24 Anonymous 555 committed a parricide and was bound up in chains for nine years. As he heard of the miracles performed at Swithhun 5's tomb he came to Winchester from across the sea. While he was praying there for the intercession of Swithhun 5, an iron ring which cut across his stomach broke. In due course another smaller ring fell before his feet and it was still hanging up in the Old Minster when Lantfred 1 was writing.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  23 Anonymi 1512 came to Winchester from various regions of England. They were all cured of their various illnesses through the merits of Swithhun 5.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  22 Anonymi 1511 were all healed through Swithhun 5's intercession in the space of three days.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  21 Anonymous 553 and Anonymous 554 went to pray at Swithhun 5's tomb from the faraway areas to the west. They were both healed through the merits of Swithhun 5.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  20 When Anonymous 552 found out that Anonymous 549 had met her previous master (Anonymous 550), she ordered Anonymous 549 to be bound up in shackles. On the following day Anonymous 549 went outside as best as she could and sat near the house. She turned herself in the direction of the church where Swithhun 5 was buried and started to pray. Then she saw a venerable man who took her in a split second to the saint's tomb. She was deposited in the sanctuary which was kept under lock and key. Eadsige 8 noticed Anonymous 549 and asked her how she had got there. She first said that she had been taken there by a cleric (Eadwald 1) that she saw there. Then, she told the entire story and everybody understood that the miracle had been performed through the merits of Swithhun 5.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  20 Anonymi 1510 took Anonymous 549 to Winchester and sold her to Anonymous 551.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  19 Hearing of the miracles which were happening through the merits of Swithhun 5, Anonymi 1509 went to his tomb to pray for their healing. As soon as they arrived, they were immediately healed.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  18 A blind man (Anonymous 547) was abandoned by his guide (Anonymous 548), who had become very angry. The blind man started to pray the Lord, asking Him to give him back his eyesight through the merits of Swithhun 5. His eyes were immediately healed and he was able to go back home on his own. His relatives and neighbours (Anonymi 1508) marvelled at seeing him healed.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  17 Anonymous 546 was taken by his kinsmen to Winchester, where he received his health, after spending three days and nights in the church where Swithhun 5 was buried.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  16 Anonymous 545 sought the tomb of Swithhun 5. When he arrived there, he was found worthy to receive his former eyesight on the very same night.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  16 Anonymi 1507 went to Rome to the shrines of the apostles from the remote areas of England.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  16 Anonymous 545 set off for Rome, thinking that he would there be healed through the blessed bodies of saints which lie there. He remained for five years but he was not healed. While he was still there, he heard from some pilgrims coming from England (Anonymi 1507 40) that the Lord was healing countless illnesses through the merits of Swithhun 5.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  15 Anonymous 543 was healed in the church in which Swithhun 5 was buried.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  14 Anonymi 1506 went to Winchester from various regions of England and were healed through Swithhun 5's intercession.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  13 Having heard a report of Swithhun 5's miracles, Anonymous 541 went to Winchester. On the very same day he was cured in his foot. And without delay he returned home on foot.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  13 Anonymous 541 lived in London.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  13 Anonymous 541 was taken on horseback to the shrine of Augustine 1, through whose intercession he was healed in one foot.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  12 Anonymi 1505 went in a group from London to Winchester where they regained their eyesight through the merits of Swithhun 5.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  11 Anonymous 540 was taken to Winchester and was cured there on the night of his arrival through the merit of Swithhun 5.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  11 He lived in London
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  10 Swithhun 5 appeared one night in a dream to Anonymous 539. He told her to tell Æthelwold 1 to command Anonymi 1504 not to stop praising God whenever a miracle happened at Swithhun 5's tomb. Anonymous 539 got up from her bed and sent for Æthelwold 1.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  10 Æthelwold 1 was living in the king's residence for the common good of the realm when Anonymi 1504 were not obeying his command to go to church whenever a miracle took place at Swithhun 5's tomb.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  10 Æthelwold 1 ordered Anonymi 1494 to go to church whenever a miracle happened at Swithhun 5's tomb. However, Anonymi 1504 bore it ill that they were so frequently awakened from their night-time sleep and decided not to obey Æthelwold 1's command.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  9 When her illness became intolerable, Anonymous 537 promised to God and Swithhun 5 that if she was healed, she would go to his tomb with many gifts and would spend the night in vigils. She obtained the health of her body, but she did not observe her promises. After some time she and her husband (Anonymous 538) went to a wedding. When she arrived, she was suddenly seized by the same illness. Then, realizing that she had behaved inappropriately, she went to Swithhun 5's tomb, where she once again received the cure on the following night.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  8 When Anonymous 536 was taken to the bones of Swithhun 5, she placed a certain piece of cloth on the altar and she was straightway found worthy to receive the eyesight she had previously lost.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  8 Anonymous 536 lived in a region of England called Bedfordshire.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  7 Anonymous 535 asked his kinsmen and neighbours (Anonymi 1502) to take him to the tomb of Swithhun 5 as he hoped to be healed through the merits of the saint. But before Anonymous 535 had finished his sentence, he was cured, left his bed and took to the road on foot. He arrived safely at the remains of Swithhun 5, whereas Anonymi 1502 were still a long way behind.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  7 Anonymous 535 lived in a province of the English called Ham in their language
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  6 Anonymous 534 had been bound up in iron shackles by her master (Teothic 1). She prayed all night for the intercession of Swithhun 5 and at dawn her shackles fell from her feet. She ran to the tomb of Swithhun 5. Teothic 1 heard what had happened and moved by extreme anger went to the place. Through God's constraint he released the manacles and let Anonymous 534 go home unharmed.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  5 On the night when Anonymi 1500 entered the church where Swithhun 5 was buried, they were healed. Anonymous 532 was also cured. He signalled to the sacrist (Anonymous 533) to go outside the church so that he could talk to him. He told him that he had been healed and could now talk.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  5 Having heard that many people had been healed at Swithhun 5's tomb, Anonymi 1500 asked Anonymi 1501 to take them off the Isle of Wight to go to Winchester. When they had been set ashore on the mainland, and were wandering without a guide, they found a mute man (Anonymous 532) of about twenty years of age, who led them to Winchester.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  5 Anonymi 1500 lived on the Isle of Wight. They heard about the healings taking place at Swithhun 5's tomb and decided to go to Winchester.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  4 Anonymi 1499 were healed at Swithhun 5's tomb.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  3, pp. 284-6 The remains of Swithhun 5 were exhumed from his sepulchre at the command of Edgar 11 by Æthelwold 1, Ælfstan 58 and Æthelgar 8 as well as the monks of both monasteries (Anonymi 1494 and Anonymi 1498). The remains were placed with honour in the minster.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  3, pp. 280-6 When Anonymi 1497 came to take Anonymous 529 to the New Minster, he asked to be taken to the Old Minster instead. He spent three nights and days there in prayer and fasting. Then, Swithhun 5 appeared to him again and ordered him to urge a little blind woman (Anonymous 530), who was sleeping close to his tomb, to go home. Anonymous 529 saw a man of marvelous height held in his hand a golden rope, with which he lowered his folded tunic. It reached Swithhun 5's shrine and went into the tomb. Then, the entire area of the tomb trembled and Anonymous 529 was healed.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  3, p. 280 A man of radiant appearance (Swithhun 5), dressed in episcopal raiment, entered the abode where Anonymous 529 was lying. He told him he should not be taken to the New Minster (as Anonymi 1497 had suggested) but rather to the Old Minster, behind the tomb of one certain bishop. After spending the night there keeping awake in vigils, Anonymous 529 would be healed.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  3, pp. 274-6 Anonymous 529 went to check his mules which pastured near the bank of the river which flows by the wall of Winchester. He fell asleep and when he woke up he saw two naked dark witches who terrified him and ran after him. Then, he saw another taller woman of a shining white colour, who managed to hurt him on his right side with the blast created by the movement of her garment. He fell down and managed to get up as best as he could after a while.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  2, pp. 266-70 While he was sleeping at night, Æthelsige 19 had a dream of two angels who told him to go to the Old Minster and find a tomb of a particular bishop. He had to lie down between the small hut built to the size of the tomb and the stone cross placed there. Æthelsige 19 ran to Anonymous 528 and told him everything. The two angels came again at cockcrow and told Æthelsige 19 that the large knife that Anonymous 528 had lost had been put in a chest and the key under Anonymous 528's pillow.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  2 As Æthelsige 19 was lying next to Swithhun 5's tomb, the latter granted him a remedy for his illness.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  2, p. 266 As soon as he arrived at Winchester, Æthelsige 19 was taken in by Anonymous 528, with whom he remained for six months.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  2, p. 266 Sustaining his infirmity on two crutches, Æthelsige 19 came to Winchester on foot as quickly as he was able.

Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  1, p. 264 Anonymous 526 came across a tenant (Anonymous 527) of Eadsige 8. He requested that he relate to his lord all the things concerning Swithhun 5 which Anonymous 526 had seen in his visions.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  1 Anonymous 526 went to Swithhun 5's tomb and prayed that God might reveal to him such a man as could deliver Swithhun 5's message to Eadsige 8. As he was getting up Anonymous 526, sensing some relief to his illness, realised that his prayer had been heard. Anonymous 526 also seized one of the six rings fixed on the lid of Swithhun 5's tomb, asking God to prove whether he had really had three visions of Swithhun 5. The ring immediately came towards him out of the block of stone.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  1; 3, p. 286 Swithhun 5 appeared to a certain smith (Anonymous 526) and told him that he should tell Eadsige 8 that he should go to Winchester and tell the bishop there that he exhume Swithhun 5's body and place it suitably within the church. Anonymous 526 replied that he thought it unlikely that Eadsige 8 would believe him. Swithhun 5 replied that Anonymous 526 had to tell Eadsige 8 to go to Swithhun 5's tomb and pull up with his hand one ring of the six which are fixed in the lid of his tomb. If it gave way to him at once, it would be clear that Anonymous 526 had been sent by Swithhun 5.
Event Lantfred.TransMiracSwithuni  1 Eadsige 8 was expelled from the Old Minster at Winchester together with others who lived in evil ways. Monks were introduced in their stead.
