Ecgwine 1 had contemplated to go because he had a desire to visit the shrines of the apostles.
10 Event Byrhtferth.VitEcgwini  i.13 After having thrown the key of his iron fetters into the River Avon at a place called Hruddingpol, Ecgwine 1 reached Rome. There he asked his friends to go to the River Tiber and see if they could catch a little fish with a fish-hook. They caught a middling salmon which contained the key that Ecgwine 1 had thrown into the River Avon.

17 Event Byrhtferth.VitEcgwini  ii.12 After having heard from Eoues 1 that he had had a vision of the Virgin Mary, Ecgwine 1 went to the same spot with three companions (Anonymi 1484). He threw himself to the ground in prayer and when he got up, he suddenly saw three virgins, of whom one was taller than the others, having a cross and a book in her hands.
18 Event Byrhtferth.VitEcgwini  ii.12 Ecgwine 1 built and consecrated a church in the place where he had had a vision of the Virgin Mary.

His obsequies were in no way similar to a funeral, but were a sort of celebration. His body was placed in that spot which he had previously chosen.

While standing in the church and after the reading of the Gospel and the chanting of the 'Agnus Dei, the iron band burst from Anonymous 522's body and sprang away from him, thanks to Ecgwine 1's post-mortem intervention. After interrogating Anonymous 522, Anonymi 1488 made the bells ring out in unison and many people hastened to the church.
30 Event Byrhtferth.VitEcgwini  iv.9 When dawn was breaking the prior of Evesham monastery (Anonymous 524) began to address his fellow monks about the lack of fish for their day of celebrations. At that point someone arrived and said that he had seen an enormous seal. The monks (Anonymi 1490) ran to the bank of the River Avon and captured the fish. A good many meals were provided from it.
31 Event Byrhtferth.VitEcgwini  iv.10 Anonymous 525 claimed for himself a certain part of the land belonging to the monastery of Evesham. The prior (Wigred 1) appointed a day on which either he or Anonymous 525 should claim the land for himself by means of an oath. After praying in the church, Wigred 1 took the holy relics of Ecgwine 1 and asked for his assistance. Then, Wigred 1 and his companions (Anonymi 1492) went to the river, crossed it quickly and came to the place chosen for the confrontation. The relics were placed in the middle of the field and Wigred 1 ordered Anonymous 525 to take an oath upon them.
