For he [Gervold 1] many time discharged diplomatic missions to the aforesaid King Offa 7 by order of the most invincible King Charlemagne 1; finally one on account of the daughter of the same king, who was sought in marriage by the younger Charles 2; but as Offa 2 would not agree unless Bertha 2, daughter of Charlemagne 1, should be given in marriage to his son [Ecgfrith 7], the most mighty king being somewhat enraged gave orders that no one from the island of Britain and the English race was to land of the sea-coast of Gaul for the sake of commerce. But he was restrained from doing this by the advice and supplication of the aforesaid Father Gervold 1.
