Description

Agreement between Archbishop Eadsige and Æthelric concerning land at Chart, Stowting, Milton and a haga in Canterbury, all in Kent. The land at Chart had been purchased by Archbishop Ceolnoth wth his own money from the thegn Hæletha and granted to him by charter by Æthelwulf, king of Wessex (A.D. 839 x 856; cf. CCC 18, S 1625).

Æthelric 76 presented the title-deeds of this estate to Christ Church during his lifetime as a perpetual gift.
3 Transaction S1471    Æthelric 76 and his son, Esbern 3, were to enjoy their estates, Stowting and Milton and the haga in the town [i.e. Canterbury] which Æthelric 76 had himself built, during their lifetimes, in accordance with the arrangements which Archbishop Æthelnoth 43 and Æthelric 76 had made. After the death of them both the estates were to pass to Archbishop Eadsige 12, if he outlived them, or to his successor, unless one of their friends could continue to hold the estates, agreeably to the archbishop, at a fair rent or in accordance with such other arrangements as may be devised at the time with the existing archbishop.
