Offa 9 shook his ash-spear and commended Ælfwine 29 for encouraging the rest of the men (Anonymi 1743). Offa 9 said that, with Byrhtnoth 1 dead, it was essential for each man to encourage the next. He then said that Godric 12 had betrayed them all and that when he rode away on the horse, many men had thought that it was their lord (Byrhtnoth 1) and because of this the army became fragmented. Offa 9 finished by condemning Godric 12 for his action. |
