Cissa 1 (Male) West Saxon regulus, fl. ?689-?699; owner of land in Surrey
l vii

Notes: This may be as many as 5 separate men though it seems likely that this is simply an important late-7thC West Saxon, potentially part of the Gewissan royal house. The twelfth-century De Abbatibus Abbendoniae states that he was a sub-king of Centwine 1 who controlled Wilts. and much of Berks., that he had a metropolis at Bedwyn and that he was responsible for building the castellum at Chisbury Camp. See Kelly, Abingdon, pp.18-19.
