Great and good

These lists provide quick links to the PASE entries for some of those who would have counted themselves among the great and the good of Anglo-Saxon England. The links will serve as an introduction to the format of the entries in the database, for (more or less) familiar people. The entries in each set of lists may be viewed in alphabetical or in chronological order.

A convenient (and very instructive) list of over 900 persons recorded in selected reference works on Anglo-Saxon England (including the old Dictionary of National Biography, the Blackwell Encyclopaedia of Anglo-Saxon England, and other works of a similar kind), compiled for PASE by David Pelteret and Francesca Tinti, will be also available on this website. Reference needs now to be made to the (new) Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, published in book form and online in 2004.
